During the spring of 2011 photographer Maria Baranova followed the rehearsals of the play In Paris, directed by Dmitry Krymov and starring Mikhail Baryshnikov. Baranova is the first photographer who has gotten the rare chance to follow the working methods of the legendary director.
Krymov's style as a director is to work closely with the actors and musicians – something that is also challenging for the photographer. According to Baranova it was quite hard to take photographs and not disturb the group at the same time. Also, sometimes a brilliant moment for pictures was lost due to poor lighting.
In the photographs of Rehearsals (Harjoitukset) one can see the development process, from the very beginning to the nearly finished play. One of Baranova's biggest challenges was to choose which 30 of the total amount of 6 000 photographs she would choose for the exhibition.
